Baklava is a Mediterranean dessert made with Phyllo dough, nuts, butter, sugar, and spices.  A sweet simple syrup flavored with lemon juice and orange blossom water is poured over the pastry immediately after taking it out of the oven while it's still hot allowing the syrup to be absorbed into it crunchy layers.

 

Since 1999, Al-Masri Egyptian Restaurant has been making and serving baklava to its diners.  But before that it was sold in such stores as Whole Foods.  With such a delicious recipe, customers come in just for the baklava!

THE HISTORY

Many ethnic groups claim baklava as their own.  But there is strong evidence that its current form was developed in the imperial kitchens of the Topkapi Palace based on a Central Asian Turkic tradition of layered breads.

Baklava boasts many health benefits as a pastry; Unlike so many other desserts, it is not just full of empty calories.  Nuts are filled with nutrition, and are naturally cholesterol free.  Although nuts are high in fat, this fat is mostly unsaturated, which has a beneficial effect on health.

The word "phyllo" comes from the the Greek word meaning "leaf", or being "as thin as a leaf."  The thickness -- or the thinness -- of Phyllo gives baklava its delicious crunchy texture.  However, the history of baklava comes from farther East. 

Baklava was once baked only on special occasions, usually by the rich who could afford such a luxury.  A poor man of that time would to exclaim, "I am not rich enough to eat baklava in my house."  Today, anyone can easily order baklava anytime, from layman to
